Hit the Road on a New National Scenic Byway

Looking to take a road trip? The Federal Highway Administration announced 49 additions to the America’s Byways program last week, designating 15 All-American Roads (AAR) and 34 National Scenic Byways (NSB) in 28 states. Routes earn this distinction based upon their archeological, cultural, historical, recreational and scenic qualities.

If you’re looking to take a road trip when it’s safe to travel, here are a few of the newly-designated All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways that offer plenty of opportunities for fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities.

Bold Coast (National Scenic Byway) - Maine

Rocky coastlines highlight this 125-mile scenic byway in Maine’s downeast region. You’ll spot plenty of seabirds and beaches with tide pools waiting to be explored on this route, and you’ll also want to check out the forests and blueberry barrens the region is known for. Stops for fishing, kayaking and hiking will also keep you busy in this stretch along coastal Maine.

Cascade Loop (National Scenic Byway) - Washington

The Cascade Loop is a 400-mile loop through some of the most scenic areas in the state of Washington. Spanning through nine distinct regions, the Cascade Loop features mountains, lakes, valleys, foothills, waterfalls, and islands. You can choose to focus on one region if you’re short on time or you can spend several days getting a feel for everything the loop has to offer. For a mountain experience, be sure to include a stop at North Cascades National Park. For the island experience, head to Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands. And if you’re looking for a little bit of Europe without leaving the United States, spend some time in Leavenworth, where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped right into a Bavarian village.

Door County’s Coastal Byway (National Scenic Byway) - Wisconsin

An opportunity to explore the beauty of the Great Lakes, Door County’s Coastal Byway spans 66 miles along Wisconsin 57 over the Door Peninsula on Lake Michigan. Along the way, you’ll find quaint villages and beautiful views of the lake and forests. Be sure to check out Newport State Park on the northern end of the peninsula. You’ll find good spots for hiking and fishing, but it’s also been designated as a Dark Sky Park, so it’s one of the best places in the country for stargazing.

The Great River Road (All-American Road) - Several States

The Great River Road is not one long road, but rather a combination of federal, state and local roads running through 10 states and spanning the length of the Mississippi River. Beginning in Minnesota and ending in Louisiana, the Great River Road can be experienced in one long road trip or travelers can choose to explore just a portion of the river.

The Great River Road starts at Itasca State Park in Park Rapids, Minnesota, where you can enjoy some hiking and fishing before you set out on your road trip along the river. Don’t miss the sign that says, “Here 1475 feet above the ocean the Mighty Mississippi begins to flow on its winding way 2552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.” No matter how far you travel, there will be plenty of places to stop and explore along the way, from parks, small towns and big cities. The road ends in Venice, Louisiana when the river reaches the Gulf of Mexico.

Katahdin Woods and Waters (National Scenic Byway) - Maine

Explore this 89-mile stretch in Maine’s great north woods that begins at Baxter State Park, where you’ll find plenty of opportunities for fly fishing, hiking and canoeing. The scenic byway follows the Penobscot River, known for great whitewater rafting. And for a spectacular 360-degree view of Mount Katahdin and the surrounding area, stop at Ash Hill.

Lake Superior Scenic Byway (National Scenic Byway) - Wisconsin

This scenic route follows the Bayfield peninsula and southern shore of Lake Superior for 70 miles. Travelers taking this route will enjoy harbor towns and villages along with spectacular views of forests, beaches, and lighthouses. Don’t miss the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a popular spot for trout fishing, boating and hiking.

Newfound Gap Road (All-American Road ) - Tennessee/North Carolina

Stretching from Gatlinburg, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina, the Newfound Gap Road provides spectacular views of the Smoky Mountains. You’ll find several scenic overlooks to stop and admire the views along the way.

Old King’s Highway/Route 6A (National Scenic Byway) - Massachusetts

Located on the northern side of Cape Cod, this newly designated National Scenic Byway winds through some of the oldest villages in the United States. You’ll be able to enjoy historical sites along with cranberry bogs, beaches, lighthouses, salt marshes and tidal flats.
